Based on the novel of David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is an incredible love story inspired by the lives of Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. The movie was directed by Tom Hooper (King's Speech, Les Miserables), while the Oscar winner, Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) were cast as the protagonists. Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve while they experience Lili's revolutionary journey of a transgender pioneer.
In 1926 Copenhagen, Einar Wegener, an artist famous for his landscapes, is married to Gerda Wegener. Gerda's an artist too, but less prominent, known for her portraits of the upper class. Their marriage is stable and loving, yet certain personal and professional traits seem to have been lost on both of them. All of this is about to change one day when Gerda asks her husband to step in for a model she needs to paint right away, and puts him in a dress. This will be a transforming experience, for Einar will soon realise that it's Lili who's the true reflection of his personality and will soon start living his life as a woman. Gerda will unexpectedly realise that she has a new muse and a renewed creative impulse. However, the couple will soon face a deep protest of the society.
Tom Hooper was born in London and studied English at Oxford University. His television credits include Elizabeth I, which earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Direction, Longford, and John Adams. His theatrical features are Red Dust, The Damned United, The King's Speech, all of which played the Festival, and Les Misérables. The Danish Girl is his latest film.
